Myopathies in the adult patient
Abstract
Myopathies affect the structure or biochemical or electrophysiological function of muscle fibres or associated interstitial tissues, and can be inherited or acquired. A correct diagnosis is required to provide appropriate treatment and long-term supportive care, as well as counselling for family members in genetic disorders. Clinical assessment requires a working knowledge of available molecular analysis as well as conventional neurophysiological and histological techniques. This paper aims to provide an overview of myopathies occurring in adults, and of an approach to diagnosis and management.
