Abstract

Sexual history-taking and genital examination are skills that all doctors should perform efficiently and sympathetically to allow correct diagnosis of sexual health problems. The process of the consultation is covered with practical help for those who are unfamiliar with the procedures. The skills developed can be used in a dedicated sexual health clinic, general practice or accident and emergency department. Patients who present with sexual health problems should be managed by experienced staff in a sensitive, non-judgemental and confidential manner. People with other problems relating to their general health and lifestyle should be signposted to appropriate services. Men who have sex with men are covered in more detail so that doctors are aware of specific issues relating to them.

Keywords: communication skills, genital examination, genitourinary medicine, men who have sex with men, microbiology, sexual history
